Christmas at the Sunneschlössli

The tree stands in the hall, the house smells of biscuits, and the valley is as quiet as it only gets in winter. We keep Christmas in a small circle — a few guests, and plenty of time.

Outside, the cross-country trail begins a few steps from the door, and down at the Vilsalpsee the Christmas market glows. And when you come back, it is warm: the Bauernstube, the steam bath, your suite with its own kitchen.

Eight days

Six arrangements across eight days, none longer than an evening. Everyone is always invited — nobody has to come, and we are glad of everyone who does. The empty days are in the list on purpose.

1. Sat 19 DecemberArrivingCome early and the trails are still yours, with a few quiet days before the holidays begin. That weekend the Christmas market at the Vilsalpsee is held for the last time this Advent — if you like, we will tell you when it is at its best.
2. Sun 20 December17:00A torchlit walk around the SchlössliBefore dinner, an hour with torches around the house, so you can see where you have landed: the swimming pond, the chapel, the view down the valley at dusk. Back at the house a glass of crémant is waiting. For everyone who has already arrived.
3. Mon 21 December17:00A welcome in the BauernstubeA glass of mulled wine, punch for the children, barely an hour. It matters to us that we have all met once before it begins. After that the evening is yours, with time enough to go out for dinner in the valley.
4. Tue 22 DecemberafternoonBaking biscuitsNina prepares the dough, and we are looking forward to a good hour of baking. What the children cut out stands on the table on Christmas Eve — every year it is the part they remember.
5. Wed 23 December18:30Cheese fondue in the BauernstubeMoitié-Moitié of Gruyère and Vacherin Fribourgeois, one long table, and nobody in a hurry. This is the evening we look forward to all year.
6. Thu 24 December17:00The chapelOur chapel stands just beside the house. We light the candles, and at the end we sing a carol together that everyone knows. Whatever you would like to bring is welcome: a poem, a story, a piece on an instrument. And anyone who would rather listen, listens. Half an hour; it needs no more. The chapel is unheated, but there are blankets laid out for you.
7. Thu 24 Decemberfrom 17:30Afterwards in the barOut of the cold chapel into the warm bar: a glass of champagne, and something for the children too. An hour, and then we leave you be — Christmas Eve belongs to the families.
8. Fri 25 December16:00“Die Feuerzangenbowle”The 1944 film with Heinz Rühmann, on the screen in the hall, with the burning sugarloaf beside it. We are very fond of it, and the children are welcome. Done by six; the evening is yours.
9. Sat 26 DecemberDeparture on StefanitagThat is what the valley calls the second day of Christmas. Take your time, we are in no hurry — and we will wrap up what is left of the biscuits for you.

Everything on this page is included for you: the torchlit walk with the glass of crémant afterwards, the welcome, the fondue with wine and water, the candles in the chapel, the glass of champagne on Christmas Eve, the film on Christmas Day. There is nothing to order and nothing to keep track of.

If you like, we will put a Christmas tree in your suite: decorated, or bare with a box of old baubles beside it. Around here, the decorating is half the evening. €75 for the stay, added when you enquire.

The four suites

For two guests, with everything on this page included. Only the Christmas tree in the suite is extra. Departure is always on a Saturday, 26 December; arrive on the 19th and you stay seven nights, five at the least. On the sofa bed a further adult is €75 per night, a child up to 12 years €40. The visitor’s tax of the municipality of Nesselwängle is charged on top.
