Begins at the door
Hiking, cycling, lakes and stillness, much of it starting right at the house.
Nesselwängle sits at the entrance to the Tannheimer Tal, our house at 1,200 metres a little above the village, quiet and yet close to everything. In 2019 the valley was voted Austria’s finest hiking region, and Nesselwängle is its quietest corner. Hiking, cycling, art and culture, cross-country trails and toboggan runs in winter: much of it begins right outside the door.
Nesselwängle, the village
We are at the very beginning of the valley: the village at 1,136 metres, our house a little higher at 1,200. If you come from Reutte over the Gaicht Pass, we are the first place you reach. Nesselwängle is small, with the hamlets of Haller and Rauth, and it is the quietest village in the valley. Nobody drives through here; this is where you arrive.
What there is here
Behind the house stands the Rote Flüh, the rock face you see from the balconies facing west and north. Across the valley, the Krinnenspitze with the Krinnenalpe: a good hour and a half on foot, the chairlift no longer runs, the MORI shuttle does if you call the day before. In the village, the Bäckerei Bitesnich, where we fetch the bread each morning, the Restaurant Schuster down by the Krinnen car park, a small chapel on the way to Rauth. If you prefer level ground, take the high path to Haller and on to the Haldensee.
How to reach us
By car via Reutte and the Gaicht Pass, from Munich, Stuttgart or Zurich. By train to Reutte or Füssen, and we collect you, just tell us when you arrive. In the valley you will not need the car afterwards. You receive the guest card from us, the bus is free with it, and from late May to late October line 123 runs from here to Haldensee, Tannheim, Grän and Pfronten. Neuschwanstein is a good half hour away, as is the Alpentherme in Reutte.

Hiking and mountain lifts
People walk in every direction here, from valley strolls to summit days. Three mountain lifts take the climb off your hands: the Neunerköpfle in Tannheim, the Füssener Jöchle in Grän and the Wannenjoch in Schattwald. Up top, themed trails carry on, the Schmugglersteig at the Wannenjoch and the 9erlebnisweg at the Neunerköpfle.
The guest card is included
On arrival you receive the valley’s guest card from us. It gives you free bus travel through the whole valley, as far as Reutte, Vils and Füssen, and from May to early November one cable-car ride up and down per night. Plus a day at the Wasserwelt Haldensee and discounts on ski and bike hire, climbing and the pools.
Art and culture all around
If you are after culture, it is never far. Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles are a good half hour away by car, along with the Ehrenberg castle world near Reutte and the historic old town of Füssen. Closer still: the Tannheim local museum, small galleries and the valley’s carving workshop. And scattered across the valley, more than thirty churches and chapels, each with a story of its own.
